West Lothian primary schools showcase art work at The Centre, Livingston
Date: 4 Nov 2008
Shoppers visiting The Centre in Livingston have been taking their hats off to work created by pupils from Kirknewton and Stoneyburn primary schools this week, as the children exhibited images of their handmade headgear.
The display which is part of a national arts project entitled Create-a-Quest, created by The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts, provided pupils aged 8 – 10 years with the opportunity to create their very own hats with a little help from Edinburgh based milliner Sally Ann Provan. The children also gained some inspiration for their hats from two trips to the National Galleries of Scotland.
From Tuesday 21st – Friday 24th October the children’s work was showcased within The Centre, providing the pupils’ friends and family as well as shoppers with the chance to view the hard work undertaken by the school children.
Jennifer Bruce, marketing manager for The Centre said: “We are delighted to provide shoppers with the opportunity to view
the children’s work. They have worked incredibly hard to create some fantastic pieces. The project allows the children to
expand their knowledge of visual art while getting involved with art organisations and artists.”
Fiona Macfarlane, cultural co-ordinator at West Lothian Council added: “Create-a-Quest has been very well received by both teachers and pupils of Kirknewton and Stoneyburn Primary Schools. Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the trips to the galleries and the visits by Sally Ann Proven, who has been providing the pupils with lots of inspiration for their hat designs. “
The project which is devised by The Prince’s Foundation for Children & the Arts and supported by Land Securities, manager and owner of The Centre, is a national programme which links 16 art organisations and 16 shopping centres from across the UK. The scheme is designed to develop the visual art skills of thousands of pupils throughout the UK. The project in West Lothian has been managed by West Lothian Council’s Arts Education Service.
Create-a-Quest will culminate in a Grand Finale in London in early 2009 where the children will have opportunity to showcase their work to a selection of VIP guests.
